TAKING AN ONLINE TEST?
There are many Enneagram tests online these days. They can be a good way to begin a self-inquiry process, one that’s valuable and insightful. If you are so inclined, try several of them for curiosity’s sake. See what each of their respective results share with you. While you may not come away with knowing your type accurately,  the process of answering the various questions posed gives us a chance to reflect on ourselves and begin our journey inward.

“THE WHAT” VERSUS “THE WHY” DETERMINING OUR ACCURATE ENNEAGRAM TYPE
What’s key about the Self-Discovery Interview is that it goes beyond “the what” we do, feel, and think into “the why” of what we’re doing, feeling, and thinking. The online tests can’t as easily get to the deeper motivations, which is why they often inaccurately declare what type we may be driven by… They’d have to add open-ended “why” questions to the tests and from there, a human would have to evaluate the responses well versed in the Enneagram’s nine temperamental structures — which takes us back to the back-and-forth dynamic of an actual interview. 😉

GETTING BEYOND THE CONFUSION
The discovery interviews is the recommended option for those of you who may be considering a couple of the types or wondering why a particular type resonates in some ways but not others. .

Sorting out the possibilities happens with training that gets to the way our motivating proclivities and propensities are organized. It’s about navigating the nuances that are found more in the “why” and less in “the what” of what drives our thinking, feelings, and behaviors.

WINGS AND INSTINCTS (SUBTYPES)
The discovery interview is also a good way to learn about your Enneagram wings and dominant instinctual drive, which ties to our priorities-setting as well as love language.

And for those of you who are already working with an Enneagram type that fits, but you want to explore other questions arising for you, this is a good process for that too.

PREPARATION
There’s nothing to prepare in advance of our scheduled meeting. I will conduct “an interview” that includes a series of questions that will be followed up with further inquiries, as in “Why” is that important? “What do you value about that? “What would happen if you didn’t do that?” And so on. The Enneagram interview process is a worthwhile, insightful, and caring process, and one that I much enjoy.
